How we compared
- Price per gel in CAD, from the pack price before tax and shipping. We used the cheapest in-stock pack we could find at a Canadian shop or a brand store that sells in CAD. All prices were listed in CAD on October 15, 2026; if we ever list a US, euro or UK price, we convert it at the Bank of Canada daily rate (October 14, 2026: 1.4263 CAD/USD, 1.5883 CAD/EUR, 1.8796 CAD/GBP).
- Cost per gram of carbs, because gels range from 17 g to 40 g of carbs. A cheap small gel can cost more per gram than a pricier big one.
- Carbs, sugar source and caffeine as listed on the brand or retailer page. We don't make health or performance claims; read the label.
- Can you get it in Canada? We only list gels that were in stock at a Canadian shop or a brand store selling in CAD when we checked.

Honey vs regular gels
Most regular gels get their carbs from maltodextrin (a starch-based glucose chain) and fructose, often in a set ratio such as 2:1 or 1:0.8. Honey gels use honey, which is naturally a mix of glucose and fructose, usually with salt and little else. Here's how the two groups compare on our pages, using prices checked October 15, 2026:
- Price per gel: similar. The cheapest honey gel you can order in Canada was Hornet Energy at C$2.71; the cheapest regular gel was SiS GO Isotonic at C$2.77.
- Carbs per gel: regular gels here carry 17–40 g; the honey gels that list carbs carry about 16–27 g.
- Ingredients: honey gels usually have two or three ingredients. Regular gels often add electrolytes, amino acids, flavours or preservatives, and some (Maurten) use a hydrogel texture.
- Taste and texture: personal. Try a few in training, never for the first time on race day.

FAQ
How many gels do I need for a marathon?
Sports nutrition guidance generally suggests about 30–60 g of carbohydrate per hour for efforts of 1 to 2.5 hours, and up to about 90 g per hour for longer efforts using mixed glucose and fructose sources (ACSM, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Dietitians of Canada joint position (opens in a new tab); Jeukendrup, 2014 (opens in a new tab)). As simple arithmetic, a 4-hour marathon at 60 g per hour is about 240 g of carbs, or about 8 gels of 30 g, or 11 of 22 g. Many runners take one gel every 30–45 minutes, with water, and practise the plan on long training runs.
Should I use caffeinated gels?
Caffeine can help endurance performance for many people; research reviews commonly use about 3–6 mg per kg of body weight (International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Health Canada recommends no more than 400 mg a day for healthy adults, and 300 mg if pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding (Health Canada (opens in a new tab)). Count coffee and every caffeinated gel, and try them in training first.
Do I need to drink water with a gel?
Most brands say yes: take a few sips of water with each gel. Isotonic gels such as SiS GO are made to be taken without extra water, per the brand.
Is a bigger gel better value?
Often, yes. Compare the per g carbs column rather than the price per gel. SiS Beta Fuel costs more per gel than GU Original but less per gram of carbs.
